As a rule of thumb: a midi skip (4-5 yards) suits small clearances and garden projects, a builder's skip (6 yards) handles kitchen or bathroom refits, a large skip (8 yards) works for house clearances and bigger renovations, and extra-large skips (10-12 yards) are for major projects with bulky, lighter waste.
Please note: skips of 10 yards and above are not suitable to be filled with heavy materials such as bricks, soil and concrete. For heavy waste, choose an 8 yard skip or smaller.
Most people underestimate the size they need. If you are between two sizes, the larger skip usually costs less than hiring a second skip later. Each size page above lists approximate dimensions, bin bag equivalents and what you can put in.
