"What size skip do I need?" is the question most people ask before they book, and it is the hardest to answer from a page of numbers. You are asked to choose from figures like "4 cubic yards" or "8 cubic yards", and unless you work with skips every day, those numbers do not mean much. Order too small and you run out of room halfway through. Order too big and you pay for space you never fill.

What does augmented reality actually do?

Augmented reality, or AR, uses your phone camera to show your real surroundings. It places a digital object on top, as if it were really there. Point your phone at your driveway and a full-size skip appears, sitting in that space.

How accurate is it?

The model is built to each skip's true measurements, so what you see is the real size. How steady it looks depends on your surroundings.

• Best results: flat, well-lit ground like a paved or tarmac driveway. Your phone maps a clear surface and the skip sits still.
• Trickier conditions: uneven, dark, or very reflective surfaces. The model can drift a little as you move, because your phone has less to lock onto.

On iPhone the preview runs through Apple's AR Quick Look. On Android it uses Google Scene Viewer. Both are the same underlying technology that powers AR shopping in big retail apps. Every preview also carries a simple note: "Approximate size for guidance only." It is a visual aid to help you compare sizes, not a tape-measure survey of your site.

Why do people choose the wrong skip size?

Most sizing mistakes come from the same few habits. Knowing them helps whether you use AR or not.

• Underestimating height. People picture the footprint but forget how tall a skip stands. AR shows the full height against your wall or fence.
• Overestimating the footprint. A skip often takes up less ground than expected, which matters on a narrow drive.
• Forgetting that waste expands. Broken furniture, timber and garden waste do not pack down. They fill a skip faster than people think.
• Ignoring weight. Heavy waste like soil, rubble and concrete is the big one. A skip full of rubble hits its weight limit long before it looks full.

What AR cannot tell you

A good tool is honest about its limits. AR answers "will this size fit my space?" It does not answer everything about the delivery. Before you book, still check these:
