How to Book a Skip with The Skip Shop
Booking a skip doesn't need to be complicated. At The Skip Shop, we've designed our online booking process to be as simple and transparent as possible. Whether you're clearing out your garage, renovating your home, or managing a construction project, you can have a skip delivered to your door in just a few clicks.
In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to book a skip with us, from entering your postcode to receiving your skip. Let's get started.
Why Book Your Skip Online?
Before we dive into the steps, here's why our customers love booking online with us:
- Instant Quotes: See exactly what you'll pay before you commit
- No Phone Call Needed: Book at midnight or 6am - whenever suits you
- Transparent Pricing: No hidden fees or surprise charges
- Quick Process: From quote to confirmation in under 5 minutes
- Immediate Confirmation: Get your booking details straight away
Now, let's walk through the booking process step by step.
Step 1: Check Your Postcode and Get Your Quote
The first step is to visit our homepage and check if we deliver to your area. We currently serve Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire, covering hundreds of postcodes across the East Midlands.
Here's what to do:
- Visit www.theskipshop.co.uk
- Enter your postcode in the search box
- Click "Get Prices"
Within seconds, you'll see if we cover your area. If we do, you'll be taken straight to our skip selection page. If we don't currently deliver to your postcode, we're constantly expanding, so please check back soon.
Top Tip: Make sure you enter the postcode where the skip will be delivered, not your billing address if it's different. The delivery postcode determines pricing and availability.
Step 2: Choose Your Skip Size
This is where you select the right skip for your project. We offer four main skip sizes, and we'll show you exactly what each one looks like, how much it holds, and what it's typically used for.
Our skip sizes:
- 4-5 Yard Midi Skip: Perfect for small home clearances, garden waste, or bathroom renovations. Holds approximately 40-50 bin bags.
- 6 Yard Builder's Skip: Our most popular size. Ideal for kitchen renovations, large clearouts, or small building projects. Holds approximately 60-70 bin bags.
- 8 Yard Large Skip: Great for bigger renovations and construction work. Holds approximately 70-80 bin bags.
- 10-12 Yard Extra-Large Skip: For major renovations, house clearances, or construction projects. Holds approximately 100-120 bin bags.
Each skip listing shows you:
- Approximate physical dimensions (length, width, height) - these may vary slightly
- Capacity in cubic yards
- What typically fits inside
- 'Prices from' for 14-day standard hire (excluding any permit costs)
- Any special considerations
How to choose: If you're unsure which size you need, we recommend going one size up. It's better to have slightly too much space than to overfill a skip, which we can't collect for safety reasons. You can also check our complete skip hire guide for more detailed advice on sizing.
Once you've selected your skip size, click "Book Now" to move to the next step.
Step 3: Do You Need a Permit?
You will need a permit if you want the skip to be placed on public land.
Skip hire permits are obtained from local councils, and their duration and prices vary between councils. You are legally responsible for ensuring you have a valid skip hire permit - placing a skip on public land without a permit can leave you liable for fines.
Rest assured, if you choose to include a permit we will do all the hard work for you. You will also see the price of the permit on the next page.
Permits do take longer to process due to needing council approval. We provide details of your local council's lead-times when entering your Delivery/Collection dates.
Step 4: Enter Your Delivery Details
This is where you provide the essential information we need to deliver your skip safely and efficiently.
Choose your Delivery and Collection Dates
Understanding our delivery scheduling helps you plan your project effectively.
Important booking timeline information:
- Fast Delivery, Including Next-Day: Our standard lead-time is 72 hours', but we do offer earlier delivery options, including next-day. Rapid delivery availability depends on local suppliers and current demand; if you choose rapid or next-day delivery and for any reason our suppliers are unable to fulfill, we will contact you ASAP to discuss optons.
- Weekdays Only: We deliver and collect Monday to Friday. Weekend deliveries and collections are not available.
- Need it longer? You may be able to extend your hire period, depending on suppliers available in your area. Use our Contact Us page beforehand, or use our contact details after booking to discuss options.
- The Collection Date: This date is a 'from' date, meaning that our nominated skip-hire partner will collect your skip anytime on or after this date. Whilst we cannot guarantee they will collect on this specific date, due to availability, they usually collect within 2-5 working days.
Choosing your date:
The calendar will show you all available delivery and collection dates. Simply click on your preferred date. We'll deliver your skip on your chosen day, between 7am and 6pm.
You can enter Additional Information if you would like to request a preferred timeslot. We will relay this to our chosen supplier, though unfortunately we cannot guarantee it will be possible.
Planning tip: Think about when you'll actually start filling the skip. If your project starts on a Wednesday, book delivery for Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Don't book too far in advance if your plans might change - we can provide next-day delivery.
Enter Delivery Details
You'll need to provide:
Delivery Address: The exact location where you want the skip placed. This should be the postcode you entered in Step 1, plus the full street address.
Placement Instructions: Tell us exactly where to put your skip:
- On your driveway
- On the road outside your property (You MUST have a skip hire permit from the local council)
- In a parking space (not on a public road)
- On your front garden (if accessible)
- On your rear garden (if accessible)
Be as specific as possible. For example: "On driveway, left-hand side" or "On road directly outside number 42, in front of dropped kerb."
You can also use What3Words to get your exact 3x3m address - we have a specific field for you to enter this when confirming Delivery Details.
Access Notes: Let us know about any access considerations:
- Narrow roads or tight spaces
- Low-hanging branches or cables
- Parked cars that might need moving
- Gates that need opening
- Best time for delivery
Permit Information: If your skip will be placed on a public road (not on your private property), you'll need a permit from your local council. We'll ask if you need us to arrange this for you. Permits typically cost between £30-£90 per week depending on your council and add a few days to the process.
Contact Details: Your mobile number and email address so we can:
- Confirm your booking
- Send delivery updates
- Contact you if our driver needs directions
What You're Filling It With: We'll ask what type of waste you're disposing of. This helps us ensure appropriate disposal and recycling. Remember, plasterboard is NOT permitted in mixed waste skips without express permission - it must be disposed of separately.
Step 5: Review Your Order and Complete Payment
The final step is payment. We believe in transparent, upfront pricing - no surprises.
What you'll see on your quote:
- Skip hire cost (includes your desired hire period)
- Delivery and collection (included in price)
- Waste disposal and recycling (included in price)
- Permit cost (if applicable)
- VAT
- Total amount
Payment options: We accept all major credit and debit cards through our secure payment system. Your payment information is encrypted and never stored on our servers.
What's included in your price:
- Delivery to your address
- Skip hire for your chosen number of days
- Collection at the end of your hire period
- Waste disposal and recycling
- Permit cost (if applicable)
- VAT
What's NOT included:
- Extensions beyond your chosen dates (contact us for extension options)
- Prohibited waste items requiring special disposal - make sure to read our list of what can and cannot go in your skip
- Overfilled skips - make sure you only fill the skip to the fill-line. The nominated skip-provider may refuse to collect if is over this line
- Overweight skips - do not fill your skip entirely with heavy material, such as soils, cement etc. Skip lorries, like all vehicles, have legal limits on how much weight they are allowed to carry on the road. If they think the skip is too heavy, they may refuse to collect until some material is emptied.
Once you click "Complete Booking" and your payment is processed, you're done. Time to celebrate - you've just booked your skip in under 5 minutes.
What Happens Next?
As soon as your booking is confirmed, here's what happens behind the scenes and what you can expect.
Immediate Confirmation
You'll receive an instant confirmation email with:
- Your booking reference number
- Skip size and hire period
- Delivery date and address
- What you can and can't put in the skip
- Our contact details if you need to make changes
Save this email - it contains everything you need to know about your booking.
Before Delivery Day
We'll send you a reminder email 24-48 hours before your delivery date. This confirms:
- Delivery is still scheduled
- The name of our chosen skip-hire partner
- Approximate delivery time window
- Last-minute access reminders
If you need to change anything about your booking, contact us as soon as possible. We'll do our best to accommodate changes, though this depends on our schedule.
On Delivery Day
Your driver will arrive during your scheduled delivery window (typically 7am-6pm). Here's what to expect:
- Driver Arrival: Our driver will call you when they're nearby if site access needs confirming
- Skip Placement: They'll position the skip exactly where you specified in your booking
- Quick Check: The driver will ensure the skip is stable and safely positioned
- Start Filling: As soon as we leave, you can start using your skip
Be aware: Our lorries are large vehicles. Make sure there's adequate space for the lorry to maneuver and that the route to your property is accessible for a large goods vehicle.
During Your Hire Period
A few important reminders:
- Don't overfill: Waste should not exceed the top edge of the skip for safety and legal reasons. Don't fill the skip solely with very heavy material, especially if you have chosen a larger skip - skip lorries have limits on how much weight they can legally carry,
- Check prohibited items: Review what can go in a skip if you're unsure
- Need longer?: Contact us before your hire period ends to extend
Collection Day
A few days before your hire period ends, we'll contact you to confirm collection. You can:
- Keep the collection date as scheduled
- Request early collection if you've finished
- Extend your hire if you need more time (there may be additional charges for this, and you may need a new permit if it's on public land)
On collection day, your driver will arrive, lift the skip onto the lorry, and take it away for processing. We recycle as much waste as possible - typically over 90% of mixed waste.
Tips for a Smooth Skip Delivery and Collection
Based on years of experience and thousands of deliveries, here are our top tips for a hassle-free skip hire experience:
Before Delivery
Clear the Area: Make sure the delivery spot is completely clear. Move cars, bins, bikes - anything that might be in the way.
Check Overhead Clearance: Our lorries are tall, and we need clearance to lift skips off and on. Check for low-hanging branches, cables, or phone lines.
Protect the Area: If placing on a driveway, or garden, you may want to put something to protect the surface, scaffold boards are ideal!
Inform Neighbors: If your skip will be near a neighbor's property or you'll be blocking shared access temporarily, give them a heads up.
Arrange Permits Early: If you need a road permit, apply at least a week before your delivery date. We can arrange this for you if you select the option during booking.
During Your Hire Period
Fill Sensibly: Heavy items at the bottom, lighter items on top. This helps with weight distribution and collection.
Keep It Legal: Don't exceed the skip's rim. Overfilled skips cannot be collected by law. Overly heavy skips may exceed a lorry's legal weight limit.
Cover If Needed: If your skip will contain lightweight materials like paper or cardboard, consider covering it during windy weather.
Think About Access: Don't let other vehicles block access to your skip if it's on the road.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book my skip?
We can provide next-day delivery when booking before midday. However, during busy periods (spring, summer, and around bank holidays), we recommend booking 1-2 weeks in advance to secure your preferred delivery date.
Can I book a skip for next-day delivery?
We can provide next-day delivery when booking before midday, but this depends on the availability of our local suppliers. If there are any issues with availability, we will contact you ASAP to discuss options.
What if I need to change my delivery date?
Contact us as soon as possible if you need to change your booking. We'll do our best to accommodate changes, though this depends on our delivery schedule. Changes made with at least 48 hours' notice are usually straightforward.
Do you deliver on weekends?
No, we only deliver and collect skips on weekdays (Monday to Friday). This is standard across the skip hire industry and helps us provide reliable, consistent service.
How long can I keep the skip?
Our most popular hire period is 14 days, which is included in your price, although some providers have shorter periods. If you need the skip for longer, we may be able to extend your hire period - just let us know before your hire period ends, we will advise on additional costs.
What happens if I'm not home when the skip is delivered?
Ideally, someone will present on skip delivery, this is to ensure the appropriate paperwork is signed, and that your skip is placed in your preferred location. Although, as long as you've provided clear placement instructions and the delivery location is accessible, it is not mandatory that someone is home. If there are access issues (locked gates, unclear instructions), our driver may need to contact you.
Can I move the skip once it's been delivered?
No, please don't attempt to move the skip yourself. Our skips are extremely heavy - even when empty - and moving them can damage your property or the skip. If you need the skip repositioned, contact us and we'll arrange this for you, although additional costs we will apply.
